The Victims: The Canonical Five

While the exact number of victims attributed to Jack the Ripper varies among historians and investigators, five women are commonly accepted as his "canonical" victims. They were all prostitutes who lived and worked in the Whitechapel area and were murdered in the span of just a few months in 1888.

Mary Ann Nichols (Polly)

Mary Ann Nichols, aged 43, is widely considered the first canonical victim. Her mutilated body was discovered on August 31, 1888, in Buck's Row (now Durward Street). Nichols had been strangled, and her throat was deeply cut. Her abdomen showed incisions, marking the signature brutality of the killer.

Annie Chapman

Annie Chapman, aged 47, was found on September 8, 1888, in the backyard of 29 Hanbury Street. Her body was horribly mutilated: her throat was slashed, and her abdomen was ripped open, with some organs removed. This gruesome murder intensified the terror in Whitechapel.

Elizabeth Stride (Long Liz)

Elizabeth Stride, aged 44, was found dead on September 30, 1888, in Dutfield’s Yard, off Berner Street. Her throat was cut, but unlike the others, her body bore fewer mutilations. Some theorists suggest the killer was interrupted during the attack.

Catherine Eddowes

On the same night as Elizabeth Stride’s murder, September 30, 1888, Catherine Eddowes, aged 46, was found in Mitre Square. Her injuries were horrific: deep throat cuts, extensive mutilation of her face and abdomen, and removal of organs. The proximity of the two murders on the same night led to the event being called the "double event."

Mary Jane Kelly

Mary Jane Kelly, aged about 25, was the last and most brutally murdered canonical victim, found on November 9, 1888, in her room at 13 Miller’s Court. Kelly’s murder was grotesque; the killer had ample time in the confined space to mutilate her beyond recognition, removing nearly all her internal organs and disfiguring her face. shutdown123
